Tomáš Hlaváček, an artist and artistic blacksmith, has been crafting awards for the Ekofilm Festival since 1977. He was approached by the festival director Libuše Novotná. Hlaváček then succeeded with his designs at the Czechoslovak Fund of Visual Artists, from which the festival officially ordered the awards. He designed and created all of his works in his studio in Březí, near a town of Kluky u Písku in South Bohemia.

For the 1985 edition he designed a commemorative medal with a motif of a stylised sun.

The winner of that year was the Soviet film “Who Will Correct the Demetra’s Mistake?” (Kto исправит ошибку Demметры?), directed by Arkady Ruderman. Its subject was the negative consequences of the drainage of Belarusian wetlands and swamps, and was a very critical film for its time.
